Brand Verdict
The widest hybrid lineup from subcompact to 3-row. Industry-best reliability and resale value. The 10yr/150K hybrid battery warranty is a standout. Every model earns 5★ NHTSA and IIHS TSP+ — perfect safety across the board. Downside: interiors can feel plain on lower trims and no tax credit on the PHEV.

Brand Verdict
Only two models, but both are top-tier. The CR-V Hybrid has class-leading max cargo (76.5 ft³) and the PHEV has the best EV range (47mi) plus likely tax credit eligibility. Both earn 5★ NHTSA and IIHS TSP+ — the CR-V is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Honda Sensing standard on all trims. Big weakness: only 1,000 lb towing on both, and the shorter battery warranty (5yr vs Toyota's 10yr) unless you're in a CARB state.

Brand Verdict
Subaru's "hybrids" are mild systems that barely improve fuel economy over conventional models. At 29-33 MPG vs Toyota's 40+ and Honda's 40, they're significantly behind. The real Subaru advantages are symmetrical AWD, 8.7" ground clearance, and excellent safety — both earn 5★ NHTSA and IIHS TSP+ with EyeSight standard on all trims. If fuel economy matters (the whole point of a hybrid), Toyota and Honda are far better choices. But if safety + AWD + off-road is your priority, Subaru competes well.

Safety Verdict
All three brands earn top marks: 5-star NHTSA and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ across the board. This is a tie — Toyota, Honda, and Subaru are all excellent choices for safety. Notably, Ford and Mitsubishi are the brands in this comparison with weaker safety results (Explorer: 4★ NHTSA; Outlander PHEV: 4★ NHTSA; both only TSP, not TSP+).

SUV Test Drive Checklist

Coming from coupes and sedans? Here's everything to evaluate when test driving SUVs for the first time. Tap items to check them off.

🚗
Getting In & Out
SUVs sit higher than sedans — this changes everything about entry/exit
Step-in height: Can you get in without awkwardly climbing or jumping? Is there a running board?
Hip point: Unlike a sedan where you drop down, SUVs should feel like sliding into a chair. Note the difference.
Door opening angle: Will the doors open wide enough in tight parking spots? Try simulating a parking garage.
Rear hatch: How heavy is the liftgate? Does it have power open/close? Check if it clears your garage ceiling.
🎯
Driving Feel (vs Your Sedan)
The biggest adjustment — higher center of gravity changes handling significantly
Body roll in turns: Take a highway on-ramp at speed. SUVs lean more than sedans — is it manageable or unsettling?
Braking feel: SUVs are heavier (3,500-4,500 lbs). Do a panic stop from 40mph. Note the stopping distance vs your sedan.
Steering weight: Is it too light (floaty) or too heavy? Does it track straight on the highway?
Wind noise: The taller profile catches more wind. Drive at 65+ mph and note cabin noise levels.
Ride quality: Go over railroad tracks and potholes. SUVs can be either bouncier or more absorbent than sedans.
Hybrid-Specific Checks
Things unique to hybrid/PHEV powertrains that won't exist in your current car
EV mode silence: Start the car — it may be completely silent. Drive on electric at low speed. Are you comfortable with the quiet?
Engine on/off transitions: The gas engine cycles on and off. Is the transition smooth or jarring? Floor it to force the engine on.
Regenerative braking: Lift off the accelerator. Some hybrids slow aggressively (regen), others coast. Which feels natural to you?
CVT/transmission feel: Many hybrids use CVTs that "drone" under acceleration. Try a hard merge — is the sound tolerable?
PHEV charge port location: If testing a PHEV, where's the charge port? Will it reach your home charger or outlet?
👁
Visibility & Parking
SUVs have bigger blind spots but better forward visibility than sedans
Forward visibility: Can you see the road clearly? You'll sit higher than a sedan — enjoy the commanding view but check hood visibility.
Rear visibility: Look behind you without the camera. Many SUVs have tiny rear windows. Is the backup camera crisp and wide-angle?
Blind spots: Check over your shoulder during a lane change. C-pillars on SUVs can be thick. Does BSM (blind spot monitoring) compensate?
Parallel park it: This is mandatory. SUVs are 6-12" wider and 6-24" longer than your sedan. Use the camera and sensors.
360-degree camera: If available, test the surround-view system. This feature is a game-changer for sedan converts.
💺
Tech & Interior
Infotainment and daily-use features you'll interact with every drive
Phone pairing: Connect your phone via wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. How quickly does it pair? Is there lag?
Climate controls: Are they physical buttons or buried in a touchscreen? Try adjusting temp while "driving" without looking.
Driver assistance: Test adaptive cruise + lane centering on the highway. This is the biggest comfort upgrade from an older sedan.
USB ports & wireless pad: Count the ports. Where's the wireless charger? Does your phone fit? Does it overheat while navigating?
🛋
Practical & Lifestyle
The real-world stuff that determines daily satisfaction
Cargo floor height: How high do you need to lift groceries/luggage into the back? Is there a low load floor?
Seat fold mechanism: Fold the rear seats. Is it one-touch? Do they fold flat? Can you fit a bike or IKEA flat-pack?
Garage fit: Measure your garage before you go. Many compact SUVs are 180-185" long, 72-74" wide. Will it fit with room to open doors?
Rear passenger comfort: Sit in your own back seat. You'll have passengers. Check legroom, headroom, and the floor hump.
